Best budget laptops for UK students
Under £500 in the UK, prioritise 16GB of RAM and an SSD over processor generation — memory is what stops a cheap laptop from crawling with twenty browser tabs open. A 1080p IPS screen and an aluminium lid are the next two upgrades worth paying for.
What matters when you're choosing
- 8GB soldered RAM is the single biggest long-term regret on cheap laptops.
- Check battery capacity in Wh, not the manufacturer's optimistic hours claim.
- Student discounts and refurbished stock routinely beat new pricing by 20-30%.

Common questions
Is a Chromebook enough for university?
For essays, lectures and web apps, yes — and battery life is excellent. It falls short if your course needs Windows-only software such as SPSS or CAD packages.
How much should a student laptop cost?
£350-£550 buys a machine that will comfortably last a three-year degree. Below £300 you usually sacrifice RAM or screen quality.
